How to Differentiate Between an Engine Oil Fluid Leak & Brake Fluid Leak

Differentiating between an engine oil fluid leak and a brake fluid leak can be crucial for the proper maintenance and safety of your vehicle. There are different ways in which you can do this, which we want to share!

How to Differentiate Between an Engine Oil Fluid Leak & Brake Fluid Leak

Two most common ways in which to distinguish between oil and braked fluid, include colour and location of the leak.

Colour of the Fluid

  1. Engine Oil …is typically dark brown and leaves a greasy stain
  2. Brake Fluid …is usually clear or light yellow and does not leave a greasy stain, and may evaporate without leaving a residue

Location of the Leak

  1. Engine Oil …commonly found under the engine area near the oil pan or filter
  2. Brake Fluid …on the other hand, will befound near the wheels

Another way to detect leaks, is to regularly check your fluid levels. Check the engine oil level using the dipstick under the hood, and check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, usually located near the master cylinder.
