How Our Jeep Love Affair Began

If you are a Jeep owner and/or enthusiast you probably know that your favourite vehicle had a “HEROIC” start in life. Originally, it was designed as an all-purpose light 4-wheel drive vehicle for the U.S. Army during World War II.

Since then, Jeeps have been the extremely valuable and versatile workhorses of the U.S. military. They have been adapted to be used for any and every conceivable purpose, they were even used as field ambulances during and after World War II.

Jeep’s Post World War II Era

In 1945, they became the world’s first mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive car. It has inspired the categories of recreational 4WDs and SUVs. In fact, in 1991, the MB Jeep was designated an “International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark” by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Later, in 2010, the American Enterprise Institute referred to it as “one of the most influential designs in automotive history”, and its silhouette is considered to be even more instantly recognizable than the VW Beetle.

American Motors was the original owner of the Jeep brand but since 1987, when Chrysler bought out AMC, it has become the property of FCA US LLC (formerly known as Chrysler Group, LLC). The Italian-American corporation holds not only the name’s trademark but the Jeep’s seven-slotted vertical front grille, which evolved from the original nine-slot grille used on the models during World War II.

The Future of the Jeep Brand

Electrification is the technology on focus for this off-road icon. Jeep announced that it will produce two new products each year from 2018 until 2022. During that time period, it will produce 10 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and four battery-electric vehicles.

What’s more, Jeep plans to produce an electrification variant of every model by 2021. It will also gradually end production of diesel engines in order to comply with the new environmental regulations, here in North America and around the world. Consequently, by 2022, Jeep will launch a new generation Renegade and an all-electric Wrangler.

Jeep will be developing both the off-road and on-road capabilities and performance of all its future vehicles. Its main aim is to produce the ideal everyday vehicles with all-weather capabilities, high fuel efficiency, and stress-free mobility. Jeep wants its urban utility vehicles to offer their owners the advantages of both SUVs and cars.
