Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931. At first, the company did not build its own vehicles. It basically provided vehicle development work and consulting. Its most popular design of all time was the “Volkswagen Beetle” which was commissioned by the Nazis as a car for the common people who at that time could not afford a full-size car.
Actually, the first Porsche vehicle, the Porsche 64, was developed in 1939, using many Beetle components. It was introduced to the world in the 1939 Berlin-Rome race. Only three were actually made, two of which still survive today. After the Second World War, in 1948, Porsche produced the 356, which is considered to be the first Porsche vehicle since it was the first model to be sold by the Porsche company. Production of the 365 continued until 1965 when it was replaced by the iconic 911, which, as we know, has been modified by numerous private auto racing teams for major world competitions.
