Car Brake Maintenance: Basic Information and Tips

At Norlang Auto, we have noticed that a large number of drivers tend not to give too much thought to one of the most vital parts of their vehicles – their brakes. As the old adage goes: “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” since our brake system is not easily visible, we tend to ignore it and when we realise there is an issue, it usually needs to be dealt with immediately. However, we all agree that our brakes and tires need to be inspected and properly maintained on a regular basis in order to ensure our safety and that of anyone else who shares the roads with us.

Your Safety Is Our Priority

Our licensed and highly trained technicians specialise in servicing brake systems for both domestic and imports. With your safety being our top priority, at Norlang Auto, we have invested a great deal in making sure we have the most up to date brake inspection and diagnostic tools available. Consequently, we can provide all our customers with an accurate diagnosis of every brake system and ensure that proper maintenance and repairs are performed right the first time. On a daily basis, we replace brake pads and rotors, which are part of normal wear and tear, but also perform extremely complicated ABS and Traction related diagnostics and repairs.

Basic Facts About Your Brakes

The majority of drivers, when asked if they know what brakes do, will answer confidently that brakes stop a vehicle from moving. Well, indirectly they do help stop the movement of a vehicle but what they actually do is prevent your wheels from turning. What stops your vehicle is the friction of your tires against the road, which is why tire maintenance is also quite important.

Today’s braking systems are quite complex and fortunately very effective in helping us control our vehicles even under the most adverse road conditions. Basically, most modern braking systems use disc brakes which consist of 5 parts: discs/rotors, calipers, pads, brake lines and the master cylinder.

How Your Brake System Functions

The brake system operates hydraulically by using fluid to transfer the pressure exerted by our foot on the brake pedal to the brakes on the wheels. This hydraulic pressure is built-up in the master cylinder and then travels through the brake lines from the master cylinder to the calipers. The calipers, which are wrapped around the brake disc, contain small pistons that push the brake pads against the disc/rotor and stop the movement of your wheel. The more pistons in a caliper, the more evenly pressure is distributed against the brake disc, which is the reason why high-performance vehicles contain more than two pistons (in fact some of the high-performance brake systems may have 8-12 pistons).

Possible Issues With Your Brake System

When inspecting a braking system, it is important to ensure that the master cylinder is working properly since it needs to be able to provide enough power to push the fluid to the brakes via the brake lines which should always be checked for any damage or leakage. If the brake lines are not in good condition you can experience a sudden brake loss, which is extremely dangerous at any speed. Of course, since the system operates hydraulically, your brake fluid needs to be inspected for cleanliness and replaced according to your vehicle’s manufacturer recommendations, which is usually every two years. It’s not enough just to top-off your brake fluid since it attracts moisture which reduces its boiling point. If the brake fluid boils it can cause brake fades (i.e. the pedal depresses farther, closer to the floor). The moisture in the fluid can also corrode the metal components within the braking system which could lead to additional brake issues.

The most common part of a brake system which needs replacement are the brake pads which clamp down on the discs. When the pads get worn, they don’t make a smooth connection with the discs and can even damage them by creating rough spots and uneven grooves. The result of worn or damaged brake pads and discs is an increase in your vehicle’s stopping distance and an increase in the possibility of having a collision.

Advice To Help You Brake Safely

Apart from having your braking system properly maintained by professional and experienced technicians like those at Norlang Auto, you also need to be aware of a few simple things which may influence the effectiveness of your braking and extend your system’s lifespan.

  • Monitor regularly the condition and the air pressure of your tires
  • Take into consideration the physical state of the road you are driving on
  • Be very cautious when driving on wet or icy roads (stopping distance can increase 10 – 30%)
  • On long journeys stop for a rest every few hours (it’s beneficial for both you and your car)
  • Avoid “hard braking” especially at high speeds (it’s taxing on your brakes and increases the possibility of losing control of your vehicle)
  • Only use your right foot to brake to avoid unnecessary brake taps
  • Coast before you brake to reduce speed and brake wear

We hope the information we provided will help keep you safe and get the most out of your braking system. For more information about brake maintenance and repairs, you can visit us, call us at 604-337-1513 or book an appointment online now.

Not All Gasoline is Created Equal

In our previous article, we provided you with some tips and suggestions about refueling your vehicles. In this article, we will go into more detail about the quality of fuel you should be using and why it matters. With today’s fuel prices escalating, our Norlang Auto customers in the Lower Mainland frequently ask us whether it is worth paying that little bit extra for premium gasoline.

Quality/Grade of Gasoline

At almost every gas station you visit, you will have a choice of regular (87 octane), mid-grade (89 octane) and premium (91 – 93 octane) gasoline. Of course, the higher the octane, the higher the price will be. Higher octane, however, does not always improve engine performance, unless your car is equipped with a high-performance engine which has a higher engine compression ratio. These high compression engines need premium gasoline because this fuel can be compressed to a higher ratio without detonating. Naturally, in order to produce premium gasoline, it is necessary to create a more complex blend of chemicals, which includes alkylates and reformates, to achieve a higher octane level. Consequently, you will have to pay a little more for this blend of fuel.

Modern cars, basically most vehicles manufactured in the last decade, have much more fuel efficient and powerful engines which require or it is recommended that you use premium gasoline. The type of fuel required by your vehicle is printed inside the fuel filler door so that you or the person refueling will be sure to use the correct fuel mixture.

The Move to Premium Gasoline

Car manufacturers have been designing smaller and smaller engines that are much more fuel efficient in order to adhere to the ever more stringent government regulations regarding fuel economy. However, since most North American car buyers also prefer to buy vehicles with decent horsepower and acceleration, engines are now turbocharged or have direct injection which have higher compression ratios that require/recommend higher octane gasoline.

Adhering to Your Automaker’s Instructions

It’s important to note that if you have an older vehicle for which the manufacturer requires you to use premium gas, you shouldn’t attempt to save a few bucks by filling it up with regular since you may end up damaging your engine. Fortunately, if you drive a new car, it is most likely equipped with fuel detection systems to prevent any damage to your engine, but by using regular grade gasoline, you will most likely reduce your car’s performance and fuel efficiency. Therefore, in the long-run, it’s better just to fill-up with what is required or recommended by your automaker.

Top Tier Gasoline Revisited

Another point we brought up in our previous article is buying Top Tier Detergent Gasoline. Again, we’d like to remind you that most of the big automakers recommend this fuel since it helps keep your car’s engine free of deposit build-up. Whether your automaker recommends it or not, using Top Tier gasoline is safe and preferable.

Lady refueling her car

Fuel for Thought: 5 Tips for Choosing Your Fuel

Most of our Norlang Auto customers in the Lower Mainland care about their vehicles and are always asking our team of expert technicians about some of the things they can do to keep them running in top condition. One of the simplest things we always remind our customers, especially those whose engine warning light has been activated or those with carbon build-up in their intake tract and valves, is to choose their fuel more carefully!

5 Tips for Choosing Your Fuel

  1. Buy fuel from high-volume stations. This will ensure it is relatively free of any deposits or sediments that may have built up in gas stations’ reservoirs.
  2. Top Tier Gas LogoChoose “Top Tier Detergent Gasoline,” that contains effective detergent additives to prevent the build-up of deposits inside your engine. The world’s top automakers recommend this and as of 2017 have included this recommendation in their owner’s manuals. By using this type of fuel, you will be able to maintain a higher standard of engine cleanliness and performance as compared to using fuel which only meets the EPA requirement. What’s more, Top Tier fuels are less likely to contain metallic additives, which can damage your vehicle’s emission system and create pollutants. Fuel brands that have the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline designation can be identified through their marketing campaigns, and/or by fueling station signage.
  3. Use the octane your car’s engine has been designed for. You can find this information in your owner’s manual or on your dashboard near the fuel gauge or on the inside of your fuel cap. Remember, that higher octane does not always mean higher engine performance. However, high-performance engines need higher octane fuel because of higher engine compression ratios.
  4. Switch to a higher octane fuel at about 150,000 km since your engine will most likely develop carbon build-up and there is an increased possibility of pre-detonations. Of course, you can avoid this issue by having your intake valves cleaned by our expert technicians who will use walnut blasting to clean the carbon deposits and restore your engine’s performance and fuel efficiency.
  5. Hot and cold weather can affect how well your vehicle runs. It’s recommended that if you are driving in areas with extremely hot temperatures, you should choose higher octane fuel. This is because when hot air enters the cylinder, there is an increased possibility of pre-detonation as it is mixed with the fuel and compressed.

Some Safety Suggestions While Refueling

  • Never keep your engine running.
  • Smoking or lighting matches/lighters is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous.
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off and left in the vehicle.
  • You should never get back into your vehicle while refueling even in cold weather.
  • Avoid any activity that might result in static electricity build-up and discharge.
  • Do not attempt to “top off” your vehicle’s fuel tank.
  • Make sure that the gas cap is securely tightened after refueling. If it’s not your  “Check Engine”  amber warning light may be activated.

Honda SUV in Nature

Lower Mainland’s Top Honda Service Centre

Honda may have begun by producing motorcycles but since 1963 when it produced its first automobiles, it has built a solid reputation for quality, innovation, fuel efficiency and developing great sporting engines. In fact, Honda is the world’s largest engine manufacturer. It produces over 14 million engines annually!

Honda Vehicles in the Lower Mainland

Honda vehicles are extremely popular in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland because of their quality, dependability, attractive designs and reasonable price. Servicing Your Honda

Like most manufacturers, Honda states that it is essential that you follow your vehicle’s maintenance schedule to ensure a top level of safety, dependability, and emissions control
performance. It’s important to keep in mind though that the time or distance intervals for servicing your vehicle recommended in the maintenance schedule (manual), are based on the assumption that you use your vehicle as normal transportation. If you drive under severe/unusual weather or road conditions then you should discuss your Honda service schedule with expert technicians such as the ones you’ll find at Norlang Auto.

We also recommend that you save all your Honda service receipts as proof of completion, and have the technician who services your vehicle fill out your Maintenance Record. The parts and fluids used by a Honda service centre are also an important consideration since they can affect the performance of your vehicle as well as its warranty. Naturally, at Norlang Auto, our customers can be assured that we only use premium auto parts that meet or exceed the OEM parts. We buy the same parts used by Honda directly from the manufacturer in order to save you money!

Top 5 Tire Maintenance Tips

Norlang Auto’s Tire Services

Norlang Auto Repair is not only Lower Mainland’s first choice for auto repairs and service but also your complete tire sales and service centre. You will find the best prices on brand name tires and receive tire promotions and manufacturers’ mail-in rebates when you purchase your tires from us. If you have a flat or your tires need rotating, we can do it in no-time flat.

We also offer a tire storage service to help you keep your tires in good conditions and ready whenever you need them. For only $30 per season, we will store your tires on-site with 24-hour security and help you free up space at home.

Tire Maintenance Tips

We always encourage our customers to maintain their tires in top condition in order to avoid excess fuel consumption, a reduction in their tires life expectancy and, most importantly,  prevent any safety issues which might arise due to tire neglect. Unfortunately, we often service family vehicles which have uneven tread wear or even worn to the point where the steel wires in the tires become visible!

Checking tire air pressure, and regular tire maintenance such as rotation, alignment, and inspections can help you save money and avoid unsafe driving conditions. It only requires a few minutes every month to ensure your driving safety and the longevity of your tires. The following 5 tips will help you save money and create safer driving conditions for you and those who share the public roads with you.

Tip 1: Inspect Tires

I still remember my driving instructor always telling me to check my tires before getting into the driver’s seat and placing the key in the ignition. I’m sure, I’m not the only one who recollects this piece of wise advice. How many of us actually do it, though? It’s important to inspect your tires, if not every time you get into the car, at least every couple of days, especially if you drive on highways or country roads. We don’t always notice if one of our tires has been damaged. Consequently, by inspecting our tires regularly for wear and tear or any damage, we can avoid any unforeseen and potentially dangerous problems. It’s also a good idea to have professionals, like the technicians at Norlang Auto, inspect your tires every time you take your car in for an oil change or service.

Tip 2: Tire Pressure

Checking your tires’ pressure to ensure they are correctly inflated can determine how long your tires last. It’s best to check your tire pressure when tires are cool. For example, check before driving or if you have driven less than 5 kms at low speed. A high-quality pressure gauge is a necessary investment for anyone who owns a car since you can check your tire pressure at home before driving. In addition, the pressure gauges at gas stations are not always reliable so it’s better to use your own. If you are not familiar with checking your tire pressure, our technicians at Norlang Auto would be more than happy to show you how to do it.

You should know that improperly inflated tires don’t wear evenly and won’t last as long. Tire manufacturers state that if a tire is consistently 20% underinflated it will last 20% less. Therefore, a tire that should ideally last for 50,000 kms would be worn out by 40,000 kms. Also, underinflated tires are the greatest cause of using excess fuel since they have higher rolling resistance, which means your engine has to work harder to move your automobile.

Tip 3: Rotate Tires / Alignment

The front and rear axles and right and left sides of any car wear down tires differently.  As a result, we need to rotate our tires regularly between the different positions. By doing this, we ensure they wear evenly and last longer.

If you notice persistent uneven tire wear, you should also ask your auto service centre to check your tire alignment/wheel alignment. This is an adjustment of your vehicle’s steering and suspension components. It is not an adjustment of the tires or wheels themselves. Proper alignment involves adjusting the angles of the tires and their contact with the road in accordance with your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications for parameters such as camber, toe, and caster.

Tip 4: Do Not Exceed Legal Speed Limits

Speed limits have been set to protect us. If you have a passion for speed then you can always take your car at one of the many race tracks around Vancouver and satisfy your passion under controlled conditions. Driving your vehicle at great speeds on public roads is extremely dangerous for numerous reasons. You should be aware that your tires have a greater chance of being damaged by road hazards or heat build-up if you drive at high speeds. Furthermore, high speeds can cause your tires to experience rapid air loss or even a sudden tire blowout. Of course, if you have a blowout, you may lose control of your car!

Tip 5: Take Note of Load Capacity

This tip is especially relevant to those of us who drive pickups, vans or light trucks. You should never exceed the load capacity of your tire’s load index. If your tires are loaded beyond their maximum loads, they can build up excessive heat which may cause a sudden blowout.

We hope our tips will help keep you safe and get the most out of your tires. For more information about tire maintenance and care, you can visit us, call us at 604-337-1515 or book an appointment online now.

If you usually drive on highways/freeways then you can service it every two years or before reaching 30,000 kms. How to Choose The Right Langley Car Mechanics

At Norlang Auto, we know how important your vehicles are to you and your family.  In fact, second to our home, our most valuable and vital asset is our car.  Consequently, we want to make sure that everyone knows what to look for when choosing the right local car mechanic. We all want to find trustworthy mechanics who will not only service and repair our car but will also treat us with respect and inform us about the actual condition of our automobile.  We all want to feel confident that when we take our vehicles to our local Langley car mechanics, we will receive the best service possible.

Do Your Research

It’s not easy finding car mechanics you can rely on since most people tend to be a little apprehensive about them.  In fact, a survey conducted in Canada found that car mechanics were in the top ten least trusted professions.  Your best course of action is to begin by doing some simple research, such as asking family and friends for referrals.  The internet is also useful since you can visit service center websites or read reviews and online comments people have posted.  Keep in mind though, that it’s difficult to find car mechanics anywhere without any negative reviews.  What you need to focus on, is how a center will deal with customer complaints.  Of course, you need to shop around before your vehicle is in need of repair!  If you wait to find a good reliable car mechanic when your vehicle is in poor condition, your research will not be as comprehensive as it should be since you’ll be in a rush to get it repaired.

Visit Your Chosen Langley Car Mechanics

After you have decided which automotive service centre is most suited to your needs then you need to visit it to see first-hand how the car mechanics work and treat their customers. For example, you should always be greeted and acknowledged when entering the facility.  If you are ignored then this may be a reflection of the importance the staff and owners give their customers.  What’s more, you should pay attention to the level of cleanliness of the facility and mechanics.  A messy automotive service centre will make a bad impression on customers and rightly so.  Cleanliness reflects the level of professionalism and passion mechanics have about their trade.  Today’s service centres have highly sophisticated electronic equipment which must be maintained as clean as possible in order to function properly.

Another obvious thing to look for is proof that the mechanics working there are certified.  The training certificates should be displayed in the lobby and/or office. It’s important to look for proof that the mechanics have the expertise to service and repair your car correctly, especially if it is still covered by a manufacturer’s warranty.  It’s also important to ensure that the automotive service center’s working hours are convenient for you.  In addition, it is a good idea to find out if they provide customers with a courtesy ride or vehicle while theirs are in the shop.

Ask the Mechanics Questions

The car mechanics at any respectable service centre shouldn’t hesitate to answer any questions you may have with ease and a courteous manner.  Therefore, ask some basic questions which will remove any doubts that the car mechanics at the particular service centre can perform the needed repairs to your car.

Firstly, ask them if they specialize in a particular part of automotive repair (e.g. transmissions, brakes, domestic and imported vehicles, European vehicles).  Secondly, you may ask if they are current members of professional organizations or if they are associated with any major automobile or automotive parts manufacturers.  If they are members or associates of national or international associations then you can be assured that they will have a reasonably high quality level of parts and service/repairs.  Thirdly, ask about the warranty they offer on repairs and parts since it is a reflection of how confident they are about their work and if they are willing to back it up.  Most premium automotive centres, like Norlang Auto Repair Langley, will provide you with a 2-year, 30,000 km hassle-free warranty.  In addition, you should ask whether their diagnostics equipment is state of the art and factory approved to ensure your car is properly tested.  The quality of parts they use is also another piece of information you should ask about since it can affect your car’s manufacturer warranty.  Finally, you can ask them about how long it normally takes to service your car and if they can provide you with customer references or reviews.  At Norlang Auto, with 10 full mechanical bays in our auto repair facility, you can be assured that you will always receive prompt service and repairs.

Additional Information to Consider

If during your conversation with the mechanics or shop managers/owners, you notice that they constantly put down their competitors or they try to emphasise that they are the cheapest or have the most discounts then you need to consider why”.  You should never choose any professionals because they are the cheapest since in the end, it can end up costing you even more money. Remember, we usually get what we pay for!

It’s also a good idea to choose a service center which has been established for a reasonable amount of time and takes great pride in being a part of the community. These qualities will give you a greater sense of trust and confidence that you are dealing with professionals who will provide you with high-quality services.

Finally, schedule a simple inexpensive “trial” service to test whether they are performing to the level you’d be satisfied with and within your time frame and budget.  Then if you are confident that your chosen car mechanics will provide you with quality services, you can schedule more expensive repairs and services.  It’s important that you have reliable car mechanics you can count on to provide you with the level of service you demand.

If you have any questions about the services provided by Norlang Auto, we’d be more than happy to take the time to discuss them with you over a cup of coffee.

SPRINTER VAN SERVICE AND REPAIR BY NORLANG AUTO

Both Mercedes and Dodge Sprinter van models are loved by their owners despite their few shortcomings.  People use these powerful vehicles for both work and recreation (in some cases, even as their primary residence).  If you drive or have driven a Sprinter van, you know that it’s a pleasure to drive due to it’s handling, power and low fuel consumption.  However, in order to get the most out of your Sprinter van and keep it running in top condition, you need to keep up with its maintenance and repairs.  Finding a service shop that really understands the unique issues commonly faced by these impressive vehicles is not easy.  However, at Norlang Auto, our European tech team has the experience and know-how you are looking for. From the most basic of maintenance services to the most complicated engine or diagnostic repairs, our team can get the job done right for you!  After all, we have our own Sprinter which we use as a   fleet/contractor courtesy van.

Your Dealership Alternative Sprinter Van Service Centre

Many Sprinter van owners have realized that it’s difficult to find a service centre that has the knowledge and experience to keep their van running in tip-top condition.  Consequently, many opt for servicing them at authorized Mercedes dealers where the cost for repairs is quite high.

Fortunately, Sprinter owners in the Lower Mainland do have the option of servicing their vehicles at Norlang Auto where we have factory trained technicians as well as the latest equipment to deal with any issue effectively and at a fraction of the cost of what you’d normally pay at a dealership service centre.  Just like dealerships, we have a direct  Internet link to Mercedes, through which we are supplied with the same factory software updates that Mercedes dealerships receive. We are able to communicate, repair and code your vehicle’s computers and modules that otherwise would have to be done at an authorized Mercedes dealer.  If you have a Dodge Sprinter van, you probably know that it is made by Mercedes, therefore the tools and information we receive for Mercedes Sprinter vans apply to Dodge Sprinter vans as well.

Issues Your Sprinter Van May Develop

At Norlang Auto, we are familiar with any problems your Sprinter van may experience so identifying and correcting them is done right the first time and as quickly as possible in order to get you back on the road.

Sprinter Van Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or AdBlue System

One of the issues we deal with has to do with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or AdBlue which must be added to diesel vehicles in order to reduce harmful exhaust emissions.  Unfortunately, the Mercedes DEF system is quite complicated and if any of its components fail, you most likely won’t be able to start your van.  At Norlang Auto, we have the proper diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the problem and repair it correctly without burdening you with any unnecessary repairs.  The system also activates a warning countdown before you are prevented from starting your engine,  This countdown can be reset by our technician to give you more time to deal with any mechanical problems.  We also remind all our customers that it’s important to remember to prevent their AdBlue fluid level from reaching low levels since it can cause the pump and heater to fail and inhibit them from starting their van.

Sprinter Van Air/Turbo Intake System

The most common issues faced by Sprinter van owners have to do with the Air or Turbo Intake System.  At Norlang Auto, our factory trained technician are very well acquainted with these issues and can help you avoid ruining your turbo and reducing the lifespan of your engine.  There is a variety of issues which can occur: from something as minor as a loose hose or a clogged filter to more complex issues with resonators and sensors.  Once the problem is diagnosed, at Norlang Auto, if it is necessary to replace any part, we will only replace them with factory approved parts or parts superior to those produced by the Sprinter factories, in order to keep your Sprinter running problem-free for as long as possible.  We always advise our customers to have their Sprinter Van engine checked regularly to avoid the air-intake hose or the charge air hose, which connects the turbo to the intercooler, coming loose and creating costly repair issues.

Sprinter Van Check Engine Light

The dreaded Engine Light can be activated for a variety of reasons, that is why it’s important to diagnose it accurately in order to avoid damaging any vital and expensive components.  At Norlang Auto, our expert technicians will use the latest factory diagnostic tools to access the reasons why your Sprinter Check Engine was activated.  Some of the most common reasons can be your diesel engine’s glow plugs, the exhaust recirculation valve (EGR), faulty sensors, a damaged or loose hose, the air charge cooler, a malfunctioning swirl valve or even something as simple as a loose gas cap!  As a result, you need to be confident that your service centre will be able to diagnose the problem accurately and ensure that your Sprinter van is repaired right the first time.

Sprinter Van EGR Valve

The Sprinter EGR valve, which controls the flow of exhaust gas, is, unfortunately, one of the van’s weak points.  It is normal for Sprinter van owners to need to replace it before the 100,000 km mark.  At Norlang Auto, we recommend that this valve is cleaned regularly to prolong its usage.  We also warn our customers that the same symptoms that are related to a faulty EGR valve can also be caused by other parts of your Sprinter’s system. Therefore, it is vital that the technicians diagnosing the problem have the experience and technical know-how so that you do not end up replacing parts unnecessarily and wasting time and money.

Sprinter Van Glow Plugs

The Glow Plug warning light is one of the most frequent indicator lights to be activated on your Sprinter van’s instrument panel. The glow plugs are basically heating devices for preheating and warming up your engine’s cylinders so that diesel combustion can occur more easily. When they are not functioning properly, they can usually cause problems with the driveability of your vehicle.  Replacing your glow plugs is inevitable since they are bound to wear out over time but for Sprinter vans, this is not so straight forward.  In some models, with the 6 cylinder engine, the plugs tend to break off in the cylinder head which can cause serious damage to your engine.  We encourage our customers to be aware of the symptoms related to failing glow plugs and visit us as soon as possible before more damage is done to their engine.  Typical symptoms are engine misfires, hard starting, loss of power or acceleration, a drop in fuel efficiency and black smoke from their exhaust.

Sprinter Van Limp Home Mode

When our customers’ Sprinter vans go into Limp Home Mode (LHM), they start to get anxious because they believe that there is a serious problem with their vehicle.  The LHM is designed to protect your engine or drive-train from any possible damage so it limits your speed to 65 km/hr.  When your Sprinter’s computer detects a fault in the operation of your engine/drive-train, it will activate this mode.  It doesn’t necessarily mean though, that the fault is serious!  At Norlang Auto, we found that the LHM is activated when your van’s turbo boost pressure is abnormal due to a reduction in the turbo air flow to the manifold.  The EGR can also activate it when it needs cleaning or is damaged and when the swirl valve actuator jams, it will also activate the LHM.  In addition, this mode can be activated when the transmission sensors readings indicate engine overspeed or improper gear ratio faults.
